Struggling to make a decision between iPhone 4 and Samsung Galaxy S. Anyone know the major pro's and cons for both?

Haha Steven I hope you're kidding.
Apple are yet to even come out and blatantly admit they fucked up with the iPhone 4 antenna design. There are reports that they were even warned prior to release by a senior engineer and they ignored his recommendations. Their solution is to offer a free case for the iPhone 4. That's hardly putting their hands in the air and saying "We fucked up, we're sorry, in respect to our millions of customers we'll recall this POS and fix it". Rather Apple are trying some light sleight of hand tricks and attempting to prove that there are other phones on the market that do suffer the antennagate issue. Ever so sadly though they are failing miserably and only managing to prove that some phones drop a bar or two of signal when held a certain way.
It's beyond a joke really. Man up Steve Jobs you weak cunt. Also I wonder how long and how many people Apple spent and used trying different grips on phones to find out how to hold it to make it loose some signal.
Oh and it's Android 2.1, soon to be 2.2 (officially, it's already out unofficially). 3.0 is due by around Christmas time according to rumors. And Android versions 3.0, 3.0.1 and 3.0.2 have been seen on the linpack charts (benchmarking app for Android). So it must be out there somewhere being tested.

so i'm still on contract with virgin till march on my iPhone 3g, but because of the iOS4 update the 3g is absolute dogshit now.
what are the chances that i can manage to get an upgrade to the iphone 4 through virgin? or if anyone has terminated their contract how much did you have to pay etc.
yes i know i can call them, but i've gotta wait till lunch to do that

In the paper the other day it said most companies are making customers pay out there contracts. I've got no problems with my samsung. What are some of the issues they have Stevey?

i really want the iphone4 but am somewhat worried by the antenna issues. i was looking at zagg cases (i know that you shouldn't need to) but they appear to fix signal issues?
the only other phone id consider getting would be the HTC desire.. but telstra's plans are turd and they are the only company you can get it on? -_-
the signal issues are the only "problem" with the iphone4 i have been able to find?

why wouldn't you consider the Galaxy S aspire?

Aspire correct. Zagg Invisible shield will alleviate the antennagate issues. And you only need to run the side shield and not the shield that covers the front and back of the phone (if you don't want).
Telstra have the Desire exclusively for now, if I remember correctly they have it for a 6 month deal before another OEM can even get a look in...
If you want one for the other carriers you need to buy one unlocked and outright online. Mobicity.com.au is great for an Australian distributor. handtec.co.uk and clove.co.uk are also both good sites but international.

yeah i just cant really afford that right now :(
dickenz do you have any other issues aside from the antenna issues with the iphone 4? or are you aware of anything else thats wrong with it?

also how fast is it likely to sell out? i really cant be asked trecking it to the city tonight at midnight..

Yeah buying a phone outright is a large chunk of pocket change.
In all honesty no there are no other serious issues with the iPhone4. The glass however is not scratch proof and takes damage fairly easily despite what Apple have said about it and being called "gorilla glass".
Other than that the only issues I have remaining are my own gripes with Apple, Steve Jobs and iOS ;)...
EDIT: Very fast... Australian carriers have extremely limited stock... I'd thank my lucky stars if I was one of the people that managed to get one tonight at the midnight release... My Telstra rep tells me "stock is VERY limited with more due over the coming weeks"...

the 4g iphone reception issues are limited to the US afaik
also from reviews its actually superficial in alot of cases, when you give it the death grip although coverage bars go out people can still make calls no problem.
the only thing i think they really need to fix is the proximity sensor, its too sensetive and people are hangin up with their cheeks.
getting the iphone 4 today though, had enough of my bold97
edit: desire is awesome
is there anywhere i can buy this zaggleshield physically or is it a ebay job?

It's an online thing to buy the Zagg shield bourne.
And you're completely incorrect about the iPhone4 and its antennagate issues. They are far from superficial. Check the ConsumerReports video. Or the Zagg Invisible shield video where you can see videos where packets are making it to the phone and then packets cease to reach the device when held/touched in that certain spot. That ain't superficial.
And it's definitely not the US only: http://www.gsmarena.com/german_stiftung_warentest_...

Hahaha thought so aspire.
Should see some of the photos on CNET of the queues. Apparently the Optus queue went out the building, down the street around the block, through an alley way and then around another block. Insanity.

I own a desire, it is fucking shit... It has completely put me off android, for a device with 1Ghz of processing power it isn't as smooth or snappy as my 3GS and not even remotely close to the speed of my iphone4...
Galaxy S has bulk issues but I put that down to the OS, android isn't a polished product like iOS and doesn't deliver the exceptional user experience that apple software does...
Iphone4, I'm with Optus and haven't had a single issue with reception, it doesn't drop calls regardless of how I hold the thing. I think the current signal strength and type (GSM/UMTS) has a lot more to do with it dropping calls...
I've been working with phones for a fair while now and I've used pretty much everything that's been released in aus and the only touch screen device that I'm happy using is the iPhone. I like being able to press 2 keys at once when typing on the keyboard aswell ^_^
Edit: One typo in all of that...

If anyone wants a desire you can buy mine, I'll even give you an 8Gb memory card... It is collecting dust :( would rather it gets used by someone... Still in the box etc

Not sure what's wrong with your Desire Jebus. I didn't think my phone could get much faster than it was with Android 2.1. Then Android 2.2 rolls in and proves me dramatically wrong. 2.2 is amazingly fast.
While I agree in some areas Android isn't as polished as iOS it'd be fairly easy to attribute that to the OS's infancy. Android is half the age of iOS and I'd be willing to put money on it that when Android is in it's 4th year, it'll be a much more comprehensive and polished product. Gingerbread (Android 3.0) is rumored to be released at the end of this year with a whole new UI... 2.1 and 2.2 was all about getting Android working well under the hood... I think the coming versions will be all about eye candy, the UI and the user experience.

Just re-sign your contract Tony. Resigning for another 24 months on the $79 plan should net you the iPhone 4 for $0 with most carriers aside from Telstra.
EDIT: Just checked the pricing Tony... You can get a $0 16GB or 32GB iPhone4 with Optus, Three or Vodafone on the $79 plan.
