The exorcist / poltergeist are pretty decent for the time they we're made. There's really know unnerving films anymore.. nothing that makes you go what the fuck and your hairs stand on end.. its all about shock and predictable scares

99% of horror movies in the last 10 years have been horrible. however the orphanage is definately in that 1%. great movie

Unfortunately most american horror movies suck.
If you want good ones, look at world cinema.
Although that said here are some newer than old english audio'ed off-beat titles (that none of your friends have probably seen) that are very much sit-able through and entertaining:
Splinter
Dying Breed
The Last House on the Left (the new remake is pretty good)
The Children
Funny Games (U.S Version)
And the latest iteration of Friday the 13th is somewhat entertaining if you get the extended version.

not bad not really horror
se7en is fucking awesome movie(probally my fav of the genre)

unfortunately, writers/directors of the genre have turned to gore more frequently nowadays to try and create the impact as opposed to the actual events and story itself
whats the movie where a family looks after the hotel thing in the winter or something and it turns the father insane or something. Was a good movie, its what i mean about the story/events within the movie that make it good rather then the shock impact from gore to achieve the affect.
Just searched for it, its called the Shining. didnt like it as a kid because it did create nightmares aha

lol dickenz funny games was probably the worst film I've ever seen- the director supposedly made it to highlight the hollywood/western cultural fascination with violence...by making one of the most unnecessarily excruciating films ever. It's not actually intended to be enjoyed as a film, and I certainly didn't.
the hills have eyes also goes down as one of the worst films I have ever seen (I haven't seen the original, only the remake)
probably the only film I've seen which you might be able to classify as horror which I enjoyed was the descent, I recommend it.
plus I wouldn't call any of the films gonzo listed like the shining and especially not scream "horror", but rather psychological thrillers etc. I guess horror usually has gore and relies on confronting imagery more than psychological "shock value" or "fear". When you watch e.g. the hills have eyes it's not really scary so much as just an attempt to overwhelm you with unpleasant viscera
