Hey dom. No matter what laptop you get, they all blow hard balls. I've seen laptops with 4gb ram and a fast CPU and it's still slow.

Battery life is unreliable with every battery type and laptop. After 9 months to a year they all get poor (i.e. about 60-70% of advertised lifetime). My friend bought a $4,000 dell one and even that has occasional problems.

I would personally go for a dell. The laptop market is wack.

I'm going to go with sommi on this one and recommend dell as well. My mate has a dell laptop (sorry dont know model) and he loves it. I have heard good things about laptops there.

'Media' as in playing music and video? 'Basic work tasks' as in office, MYOB, that sort of thing?

In that case I'd go for reliability over performance for money. Fujitsu laptops are generally made in Japan and are of top quality. Lenovo (IBM) also have quite a good reputation for quality and reliability.

price wise - dell, asus,

quality wise - fujitsu, sony vaio, toshiba

battery life - dell have just brought out a 12hour laptop. Most are around 2-3hrs if your lucky.

unfortunately your requirements are a paradox, the more processing power, ram, graphics, and features, the lower the battery life.

It is completely un-realistic to suggest something that will fit those requirements perfect.

Media Laptop is the requirement that doesn't really fit the others.

What do you mean by media laptop?

agreed. a friend has one and it's slow as all hell and he isn't stupid with how he uses/what he puts on it.

i have a dell which works a lot better than his, even though is considerably slower CPU wise.

my friend bought a new sony vaio

T8500 (exceptionally fast)
3gig RAM

$1500 (cheaper than the DELLS)

it works fine for the limited use i have had on it.
The exterior casing and craftsmanship also has dell booked.

i use a Benq Joybook s41
greatest laptop ive come across for prices/reliability
benq are made by acer for those playing at home

battery life is about 2 hours and 20 minutes while playing diablo2/cs and still running all the usual msn mirc firefox and occassionally music, runs it to about 2 hours.
as far as dell go, i fix a dell or tell the client to buy a new 1 every 1/2 months.
also i find toshiba very very poor quality. Ive had/seen alot of them break.
