Yer so I bought hl2 episode 2 and installed it and when I tried to play it I get an error maessage saying "hl2.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close." Same thing happens with CSS HL2DM ProMod Garys Mod etc. I've "perused" through lots of shit on google finding a lot of people with the same problem but no solution that can help me.
My computer specs are
AMD Athlon dual core 4.2 ghz
2 gb corshair ram
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS
(Not a computer person so dunno if this is what you need to know)
I have tried;
Updating drivers, updating directX, reinstalling games, reinstalling steam. Anyone else had this problem?

So what started as hl2 error has now turned into my nforce and display drivers becoming corrupt and some KILL-AD trojan or some shit that gives me a 1 minute countdown before resettingmy computer. I think its gone now thanks to that kasperspy shit but now i cant connect to the net lol >.> what drivers do I need? Is nForce my network driver or something?

bulba i had a similar problem for all hl2 engine games, and by updating my mobo software.. it fixed itself :X
post me up the model of your mobo and maybe i can link you to its driver

To be honest if your operating system (XP probs) is on a partition of its own i would just format it. As if let a trojan pwn you! Tooo much kiddy goatsy pr0n.

whats a mobo ( LOL :( ... ) btw hl2 fixed and I was playing for a while and then I ran my virus scan again because I was a tad bit paranoid Id be cut off from the e-world. Then, like clockwork, more complications arise ... in the form of my pc logging straight out when I try to log in. I dont even get to see the wallpaper I just get a Loading you settings *Ding Ding Ding ding-ding* then a saving your settings *ding ding dong ding*
Apparently the virus scan renamed some shit in my registry / deleted it and now I cant log on. Ive tried fixing (destroying) it through recovery console the result being I log in and out with 800 x 600 at 16 bit colours with no sound instead of my normal settings.
Im just delaying a little longer so I dont have to track down a Special Edition of "DITB XP" :(

you could mess around for ages trying to fix all the issues, but you're better off just formatting XP it'll take under 2 hours
edit: by the sound of it you should have somebody else do it
